AI Image Detector

Rebuild trust in visual content by identifying images generated or altered by AI, with precision down to the pixel.

Please note: AI photo-editing models rarely confine edits to the exact feature you prompt. Through inpainting, nearby textures, lighting, or details are often regenerated to maintain realism. For this reason, the AI Image Detector may highlight a wider area than the specific element originally intended to be changed.

What is AI Image Detection?

AI image detection is the process of analyzing digital visuals to determine whether they were created or altered by artificial intelligence.

The Copyleaks AI Image Detector makes this process actionable, transforming the concept of detection into a practical tool that integrates directly into your workflows. Unlike traditional authenticity checks, the AI Image Detector verifies originality by examining:

  • Image structures
  • Compression patterns
  • Pixel-level anomalies

See What Other AI Image Detectors Miss

While other AI image detectors stop at the obvious, Copyleaks digs deeper, detecting blended, partially generated, or subtly altered visuals that slip past standard tools.

Why AI Image Detection is Important

Generative AI is advancing at an unprecedented rate, making photorealistic deepfakes, altered evidence, and fraudulent images nearly impossible to spot with the human eye. What’s more, user-friendly AI image creation tools are widely available, enabling even non-experts to create convincing AI-generated visuals.

Introducing the Copyleaks AI Image Detector, available through API. It identifies AI-generated and AI-modified content at the pixel level, giving you a definitive answer to a critical question: Is this image original?

And because our AI Image Detector is trained on leading AI generation tools by companies such as Midjourney, OpenAI, Stability AI, and Google, you can trust it to recognize content from the most widely used sources.

How AI Image Detection Works

AI Image Detection goes beyond simple “AI or human” labels.

When you submit an image, our technology analyzes its structural and embedded characteristics. After the scan, you’ll see a detailed overlay of the original image that visually highlights the specific pixels that were altered, generated, or manipulated by AI.

This transparent approach provides a clear visual report, giving you unmatched confidence.

Who Needs AI Image Detection?

Financial Services

Challenge:

Fraudulent actors attempt to manipulate financial documents, statements, and IDs with AI to open accounts or access funds under false pretenses, causing violations of “Know Your Customer” policy.

Solution:

AI Image Detection verifies the authenticity of documents and customer-submitted images, stopping fraud before it enters the system and protecting both institutions and customers.

Government

Challenge:

Fake IDs, passports, and official records are becoming increasingly easy to forge with the aid of AI, thereby undermining the integrity of public systems and services.

Solution:

AI Image Detection safeguards digital and scanned documents by flagging tampered or synthetic imagery, ensuring only legitimate credentials are accepted.

Insurance

Challenge:

Claimants can submit altered photos of vehicles, property damage, or medical evidence, inflating claims or inventing incidents altogether.

Solution:

AI Image Detection identifies manipulated claim photos, helping insurers process legitimate cases faster while preventing fraud and saving costs.

Media and Publishing

Challenge:

Misinformation spreads quickly when AI-generated or altered images appear in news coverage or across social media platforms.

Solution:

AI Image Detection gives publishers and journalists the ability to validate visuals before they reach the public, protecting credibility and restoring trust in the media.

Online Marketplaces

Challenge:

Sellers can manipulate product photos to hide flaws, exaggerate quality, or present counterfeit items as authentic.

Solution:

AI Image Detection helps marketplaces confirm that listing images match reality, ensuring transparency for buyers and accountability for sellers.

Profile Management (dating apps, social media, UGC commentary)

Challenge:

Fake profiles built with AI-generated headshots and manipulated selfies erode trust, enable scams, and create safety risks for users.

Solution:

AI Image Detection verifies whether profile photos are authentic or AI-generated, strengthening platform integrity and user safety.

Real Estate

Challenge:

Agents, owners, and renters can alter listing photos with AI to hide flaws or add virtual upgrades, misleading buyers, renters, and short-term guests on platforms like Airbnb.

Solution:

AI Image Detection validates real estate photos by detecting manipulations and AI-generated staging, helping platforms maintain credibility and protect clients.

AI Image Detector FAQs

No detection system is completely impossible to bypass, but Copyleaks makes it significantly harder than other solutions. Our technology is designed to recognize subtle traces of AI involvement that cannot be easily removed through simple edits or disguises.

Attempts to hide or alter AI generation often leave behind detectable patterns. While edge cases exist, the Copyleaks AI Image Detector is continuously updated to adapt to new AI models and editing techniques, improving resilience against attempts to evade detection.

Accuracy can vary across different tools, image types, and use cases. What makes Copyleaks unique is its focus on transparency. Instead of only giving a probability score, our solution provides a visual report that highlights areas of manipulation. This makes it easier for users to determine results and make informed decisions.

The Copyleaks AI Image Detector uses advanced machine learning combined with forensic image analysis to identify patterns consistent with AI generation or manipulation. The system reviews an image for anomalies and then presents a visual overlay showing areas most likely to have been altered by AI.

The Copyleaks AI Image Detector classifies images into two categories:

  • Human: These are original photos that have not been created or edited using AI.
  • AI: This includes images that are fully generated by AI as well as human photos that have been partially altered using AI tools.

Copyleaks supports a wide range of leading generative AI platforms, including, but not limited to:

  • Midjourney
  • DALL-E
  • Stable Diffusion (SDXL)
  • FLUX
  • Pixtral

Even if a model is not explicitly listed, Copyleaks often detects common AI artifacts. We are regularly expanding model training to stay ahead of new releases.

No AI detection system is perfect. The accuracy of the tool depends on the presence of a strong “signal” in the image, which refers to the patterns and artifacts left behind when content is generated or altered by AI. If an area of an image has very uniform or repetitive data, there is less information for the model to analyze, which results in a weaker signal. This principle is similar to how AI text detection works, where small volumes of text may not provide enough meaningful data for a reliable analysis.

The Copyleaks AI Image Detector is designed for high accuracy and a low false-positive rate. Our accuracy is verified through rigorous internal testing.

The Copyleaks AI Image Detector is designed to identify alterations from generative AI tools. It does not currently detect other types of image modifications, such as:

  • Manual edits made in software like Photoshop
  • Collages created by combining multiple photos
  • Simple filters (e.g., black-and-white, vintage)
  • Basic adjustments (e.g., sharpening, blurring, cropping)
  • Formats: .png, .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .webp, .heic, .heif
  • Minimum resolution: 512 pixels on the shortest side
  • Maximum resolution: 27 megapixels
  • Maximum file size: 32 MB

AI tools are designed to make alterations look natural. To do this, they blend the surrounding area of the alteration by changes to lighting, shadows, and textures. The Copyleaks AI Image Detector identifies these broader changes, which may result in highlighting a larger area in the report.

There are a few possible reasons:

  • Subtle edits: The altered portion of the image is small or too subtle to be identified.
  • Reduced quality: The image was resized, compressed, or saved in a way that reduced the available “signal” needed for detection.
  • Low resolution: The file scanned was not the original, high-quality version

For best results, always upload the original image in its highest resolution.
